Engela & AJ | Reception

December 2010 | Red Butte Gardens, Salt Lake City, UT

When we first met with Engela and AJ, we knew they’d be easy going.  It’s just who they are as a couple.  They didn’t have a long list of wants or needs for their wedding day, only a simple request to have a “winter picnic” wedding reception.  We must admit that when we first heard “winter picnic,” it seemed quite contradictory.  But as we spoke further and got a better feel for what it was they were expecting, we quickly developed lots of fun ideas and ways to incorporate a “picnic feel” in the middle of December.

The Orangerie at Red Butte Gardens was the ideal setting for this winter picnic to take place.  Surrounded by beautiful plants and trees, it was truly a garden setting in the middle of winter.  Engela and AJ invited close friends and family for an intimate luncheon.  Engela’s friend played a beautiful harp solo, guests dined on a delicious meal provided by Utah’s best caterer, Culinary Crafts, and then at the bride’s request, a giant, fortune cookie pinata was brought out.

A pinata?  That’s right!  No, not the first thing you’d expect to see at a wedding, but why not?  It is a celebration – and who doesn’t love a pinata?  The bride and groom invited their little nieces and nephews to take a few strikes at the oversized fortune cookie first.  Then came the bride and groom’s parents.  But believe it or not, no one could break into the fortune cookie!  Engela came along next, and did some substantial damage to the pinata, but reserved the grand finale for AJ.  On his 3rd and last strike, AJ took one hard swipe, and amazingly enough, the stick broke in half!  Guess the fortune cookie won!
